The porosity meter is a special pycnometer specifically designed to obtain reliable measurements of the open porosity and true bulk density of materials used in noise control. The system is based on the pressure/mass isothermal method where the mass of the test sample is measured at different pressures. From the perfect gas law, the volume of the solid phase is obtained, from which the bulk density and open porosity of the material are deduced. Different gases can be used: air, argon, xenon or krypton. Accuracy of the method increases with the bulk volume of sample and the density of the used gas.
The Mecanum's porosity meter has been a proven value to the world’s leading material suppliers to both the automotive and aircraft industry. It is used for:
- quality control in the manufacturing process of materials
- research, development, and innovation
- feeding acoustical prediction software dealing with sound absorbing materials
Features
The system includes a verification sample with its verification chart and the Phi-X™ software. The Phi-X™ software assists the experimenter during the measurement and and calculate the statistics on the open porosity and true bulk density. The system works with disc shaped samples as those used for Mecanum’s or B&K impedance tubes, resistivity meter and quasi-static mechanical analyzer. Optional calibrated samples are available.
